Treat It Like a Job

When a woman who had lost 200 pounds was asked how she did it, she said: "I treated weight loss like a job. No matter how I felt, I showed up." Then she listed all the things she "showed up" to do every day, every week (planning the right food, tracking, exercise routine, etc).

How long have you been saying "I'm too tired" or "I'll do it tomorrow" or "I just don't feel like it". Basically you are treating your weight loss goal as optional. Instead, do what successful losers do, and treat it like a job. No matter what, they show up! You have to show up, too.

Similarly, a wise person once said that 90% of life is just showing up -- because so few people do.

That attitude alone can work magic for you.

So many people consider themselves good employees -- but they aren't good to themselves. They shortchange themselves -- yet show up 110% for work. You would never be hit-or-miss with a job that paid money. Your employer wouldn't tolerate it and you would be fired. Why would you be inconsistent with your health? Show up! In fact, you are more important than your job.

However, this job is BETTER than a regular job because you are essentially paying yourself instead of someone else. And no one outside of yourself will judge you. You give yourself performance reviews. It's also a job that can be rewarding and fun simply because of the challenge.

Another way to look at it: treat weight loss like an appointment. Or a college class. Or getting a college degree.

In fact, weight loss is a continual, daily learning and educational process ... a full time job by itself. Personal health is a topic you will be focusing on your whole life... because you want health, and because you are worth it.

When you treat health like a job, it can help with emotional eating: Instead of letting emotions determine what you eat, you can immediately remove negative self-talk and get down to business.

There are many ways to "show up" throughout this website. One great way is to get started with a Food Journal is a great way to show up every day. You can not only log food, but make plans and check things off (much like you do for a job!).
