Paper Clip Chain

This simple device will help you stay focused on your goals, while at the same time recognize your achievement. Many people have used this idea to succeed with weight loss goals.

What you do is simply create a chain of paper clips where each paper clip represents one pound lost. Add clips to the chain as you go. Keep it someplace visible (ideally always in front of you) to keep you motivated.

It's a great feeling to add clips to the chain, and to see how far you've come as it grows longer.

Where to put the chain? It's different for everyone, but here are some ideas:

  • Next to your computer monitor at work ... (a reminder to say "no thanks" to the office doughnuts)
  • In the bathroom next to your scale
  • Next to the refrigerator (or on the door so it makes a noise when opening)
  • In your pocket
  • On your dresser where you can see it every morning

In reverse:
If you are counting down to a certain weight goal, is to do it in reverse. Create a chain where each clip represents one pound you want to lose. Remove them as you go ... and enjoy seeing it get smaller.

Spice it up:
Use a colorful paper clip for every 10th pound lost

Alternatives to paper clips:

  • Marbles in a jar
  • Craft buttons in a jar
  • Create a necklace with beads from a craft store, then wear the necklace when you are done
  • Gold stars or variations thereof

Tip: Some people remove chains if they gain weight -- which is a different kind of motivation. Keep in mind that weight naturally fluctuates due to water weight and other causes that are not true weight gain (see Weight Loss vs Fat Loss). Our advice is to allow yourself 3 - 5 pounds of leeway to account for this. In other words, we suggest either keeping your chain at your lowest weight unless you go over a certain personal threshold, or don't worry about removing links at all. As long as you keep going, that chain still represents your progress.
